Review for the french novel 'Miroir of our sorrows' (The Great Swindle) by Pierre Lemaitre.

The illustration captures a key moment in the story, when the character suddenly finds her life turned upside down. Her sense of confusion becomes a prelude to what Paris itself would experience shortly afterwards, as the German advance forced thousands of people to flee the city.

I explored three different ways of staging the scene, looking for the composition that best conveyed the character’s sense of disorientation. I chose the composition that included the Parisians witnessing the event as it suddenly interrupts their everyday life, unaware that just a few months later that same normality would be swept away by the war.
