Bystronic Case Study
A report people actually open
Overview
Bystronic commissioned a series of illustrations for its Sustainability Report to communicate complex industrial and sustainability topics through a clear visual language. The illustrations had to integrate with the company's identity while making technical information accessible to investors, customers and industry stakeholders.
Challenge
The project had to represent a highly technical manufacturing ecosystem without overwhelming the reader. The goal was to simplify complexity while preserving the precision and credibility expected from an industrial leader.
Visual Concept
The report revolves around two key narratives: the Value Chain and their signature laser cutting machine. The Value Chain presents technology as part of a connected ecosystem where people, production and materials interact through a coherent visual landscape. The Laser cutting machine is the entry point to explain the company's contribution to the circular economy.

From Sketch to Final
The client provided AI-generated material as an initial reference. The illustration was then completely redesigned by organising the space, simplifying industrial elements and refining the composition into a clear visual journey. Roads, crossings and recurring elements were carefully positioned to guide the reader naturally through the value chain.
Illustration Principles
The illustration balances technical accuracy with visual warmth. A restrained colour palette, textured surfaces and simplified forms create an image that is immediately readable while rewarding a closer look through layered details and visual connections.
Three primary colours - petrol blue, olive green and sand beige - combined with red accents create consistency across the report while reinforcing hierarchy and navigation.

Key illustrations for Bystronic’s 2025 sustainability report - The value chain map illustrates the ecosystem in which Bystronic operates. It establishes relationships between technology, efficiency and circularity, guiding the reader through abstract concepts and connecting every part of the ecosystem that Bystronic nurtures
Why Illustration?
Rather than relying on diagrams or photography, illustration allowed the report to connect complex information into a single visual narrative, easier to understand and more engaging to explore.

Attention to detail: standardised icons clashed with the smooth design, so I created a new set designed to accentuate the roundness for maximum integration.
